March 19, 1969: Chain Letters

The city postmaster warns residents that chain letters are illegal.

Postmaster E. V. Pool Jr. warned Winder residents that chain letters were illegal March 19, 1969. “Letters promoting endless chain schemes for obtaining money, savings bonds, or other things of value violate the postal lottery and fraud laws,” the postmaster is quoted as saying. Chain letters involving prayers that contained a threat of bad luck to those breaking the chain were also illegal, and Pool warned residents anyone participating in such activities could face criminal prosecution.
