March 15, 1945: A Silver Star for 'Smiley'
Winder resident becomes a starting player on the Fourth Marine Division's undefeated football team.
The Winder News announced March 15, 1945, that Marine First Lieutenant Howard W. “Smiley” Johnson of Winder had won the Silver Star medal and the went on to become a starting player on the Fourth Marine Division’s undefeated football team. Johnson had previously played for the University of Georgia and the Green Bay Packers.
