Handful of Days Remain to Donate to the “CAN” Do for Hunger Campaign in Braselton

Donations of canned goods and nonperishable items are still being accepted at Braselton Town Hall through Thursday, Dec. 22.

The town of Braselton urges residents, friends and neighbors to help them fill the shelves at local food pantries in an effort to ensure that no one in the Braselton area goes hungry this holiday season.

With a campaign that kicked off in early 2011 and consisted of several drives at area events, the recent efforts of the local community of The Village at Chateau Elan — resulting in the collection of hundreds of nonperishable items for The Vine Food Bank and Zion Baptist Food Bank of Braselton — was perhaps the most successful to date.

Led by Braselton Councilwoman Peggy Slappey and organized by Village residents Ray Booher, Larry Deal, Ed Roach and Derrell Patrick, at last count the neighborhood had collected 704 canned and nonperishable food items for the “CAN” Do for Hunger drive.

Braselton Town Manager and Clerk Jennifer Dees wishes to remind Patch readers that it’s not too late to do your part to “CAN” hunger in time for the Christmas holiday. Donations are still being accepted at Braselton Town Hall now through Thursday, Dec. 22. Essential items needed through the “CAN” Do effort include:

  • Canned goods and dry foods such as pasta, rice and beans
  • Canned meats such as luncheon meat, spam and tuna
  • Much needed personal hygiene items, including toothpaste, brushes, shampoo, soap, deodorant
  • Paper goods
  • Cleaning products, such as dish and laundry detergents

The organizers of the “CAN” Do campaign request that donors refrain from contributing items in glass containers due to the fact that they may break in transport nor should they donate items past their expiration date.

Braselton was very proud to be among the member cities of this year’s “CAN” Do for Hunger Campaign, which also included Barrow’s own city of Auburn, as well as the Gwinnett cities of Berkeley Lake, Buford, Dacula, Duluth, Grayson, Lawrenceville, Loganville, Norcross, Snellville, Sugar Hill and Suwanee. To those who have made donations and volunteered their time and talents to make “CAN” Do for Hunger a success, the town of Braselton thanks you!
