Feb. 3, 1981: Diesel Powered

Board of Education votes to purchase new buses.

The Barrow County Board of Education voted Feb. 3, 1981, to purchase its first diesel buses. The three, 60-passenger buses powered by diesel engines were to be purchased from Akins Ford Company of Winder and were expected to cost the county $69,120.42, about $9,000 more than buses with standard engines. Board member W. A. Bramlett said the diesel buses would double fuel mileage, saving the county about $1,000 a year over the course of eight to 10 years.
