Feb. 21, 1987: In Protest

Group rallies to protest the stabbing death of Bethlehem Elementary School principal.

A KKK rally was planned for Feb. 21, 1987, at the intersection of Broad Street and U.S. Highway 29. A permit issued to the KKK by the city of Winder allowed those assembled to collect donations and hand out literature but they were prohibited under state law from soliciting drivers. The Winder News reported that the KKK had applied for permits for the rally to protest the stabbing death of Bethlehem Elementary School Principal Murray Kennedy in November 1986. Kennedy, who was white, was allegedly stabbed by a black student. A silent prayer vigil was planned at St. Anthony’s Episcopal Church to “pray for the peace and tranquility of the community” in light of the KKK’s plans to assemble.
