Feb. 10, 1937: Gathered in Protest

Residents assemble in opposition of measure establishing a county Board of Commissioners.

About 50 residents gathered at the county courthouse Feb. 10, 1937, to oppose a proposed measure in the state General Assembly calling for a change in the administration of Barrow County, particularly the establishment of a Board of Commissioners. “… there was considerable mystery as to who prepared the bill and for what reason it was offered in the shape it was drawn,” the article read. Residents were most concerned, the article stated, about the danger of increased costs associated with operating the county and a provision making it possible for leaders to institute a “chain gang system.”
