City Spotlight on Winder: Leaving its Mark on Georgia History

Follow the signs for a trip through time.

Did you know that of the 15 Georgia Historic Markers located in Barrow County, 11 are right here in the county seat of Winder?

Peppered throughout the city and rising from the well-manicured historic courthouse grounds to the high grass at the outskirts of town at Ga. Highway 211 are metal markers proudly conveying the history of the region.  Each of these markers was put in place by either the Georgia Historical Commission, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources or the Barrow County Historical Society.

The next time you and the family are out for a nice leisurely drive, take a trip through time and see if you can find them all:

  • “Barrow County”located on the historic courthouse lawn at Broad and Athens streets
  • “The Stoneman Raid Battle of King’s Tanyard”located on the historic courthouse lawn at Broad and Laura streets
  • “Builder of the Nation”located at the Railroad Station at Broad and Porter streets
  • “Fort Yargo”located 0.1 miles down Carson Wages Road on Ga. Highway 81 (2.8 miles south of the junction with Ga. Highway 8)
  • “Russell House”located on GA 8, 1.4 miles east of the junction with Ga. Highway 81
  • “Concord Methodist Cemetery”located on Ga. Highway 211/Athens Street near the junction with Church Street
  • “Winder’s Most Historical Site”located on Ga. Highway 211/Athens Street at Church Street
  • “Battle of King’s Tanyard”located on Ga. Highway 211, 5 miles north of the historic courthouse
  • “Bethabra Baptist Church”located on Old Thompson Mill Road, off Ga. Highway 211, 7 miles north of the historic courthouse
  • “William Pentecost (born Nov. 4, 1762 – died Jan. 27, 1839)”from the historic courthouse, take Ga. Highway 53 north for 0.6 miles, turn right on Ga. Highway 82 and follow 4.1 miles to marker and Pentecost Methodist Church
  • “Rockwell Universalist Church”located on Ga. Highway 53, at Rockwell Church Road, 3.5 miles north of the historic courthouse
