City Spotlight on Statham: Only Two Chances Remain to Visit the Farmers Market

Sept. 3 and 10 mark the final dates of the 2011 farmers market season.

Bright and early every Saturday morning since June, Railroad Street at the heart of historic downtown Statham has been lined with local farmers and vendors selling fresh produce and quality goods to the delight of neighbors and visitors alike.

Each week has carried a special theme in order to keep this event as tasteful and fresh as the fruits and vegetables it sells. Designed to create a healthy community encounter while supporting the local economy, only two chances remain to experience the Statham Farmers' Market firsthand before the end of the 2011 season.

  • Saturday, Sept. 3: Labor Day Dance Weekend — Don’t forget your wallet OR your dancing shoes. In addition to the presence of beloved local vendors such as Lazy B Farm, Pro Sharp and Sweet Tea, there will be a square dance demonstration at the market in the morning, so come prepared to see the show and maybe even do a little do-si-do. At 7 p.m. that evening, you can demonstrate your own dancing skills during the free contra dance — this traditional and FUN folk line dance comes complete with band and caller. Dancing in the streets is entirely welcome.
  • Saturday, Sept. 10: To cap off the 2011 season, and pay tribute to the victims and heroes of 9/11, this week’s theme will be Firefighter and Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. The Winder Barrow ROTC will open the market by presenting the colors, complete with bugle and bag pipe players. Members of local fire and police departments will be in attendance, and the Yargo Community Orchestra will perform.

The Statham Farmers' Market is open from 8 to 11 a.m. both dates. To stay up-to-date on the latest news and happenings, and view photos from past events, visit the Statham Farmers' Market Facebook page and click “like”. The market will return in June 2012.
