City Spotlight on Braselton: Get to Know the Mayor

Barrow Patch shines a spotlight on Mayor Bill Orr.

At the heart of Mayor Bill Orr’s service to the town of Braselton are his belief in giving back to his community and his dedication to keeping one of the fastest growing communities in the United States a “town.”

“I want to maintain the sense of our community. Braselton has carefully preserved the sense of a small town while we have had rapid growth," Orr said. “I believe that a vibrant community is a community that knows each other and works toward common goals.”

Many of those goals are already being realized. It is the mayor’s hope that the most recent community-based initiative to provide multi-use paths for pedestrians, bicycles and golf carts will go a long way toward getting residents of Braselton out of their homes and cars to interact and meet one another.

In addition, the new community garden at the old Braselton Family mule barn is designed to bring children, parents, teaching and fun together in a simple learning environment.

The town of Braselton also plays host to a wide variety of community events, including the recent Celebrate Braselton Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks, Movies in the Park, the Lighting of the Braselton Tree and Celebrate the Holidays in Braselton Festival and Parade.

“The many road projects that we have ongoing in our town will also improve the way citizens and visitors access our town,” Orr said. “Planning infrastructure is fundamental to preserving our sense of ‘town’.”

In addition to his role as mayor, Orr has served his community as an active member of the Rotary Club of Braselton, a volunteer for the American Heart Association and a consultant for Junior Achievement. Orr began his service to the town of Braselton in January 2010, and his current term ends in December 2013.

“I fundamentally believe that the job of mayor is a position of service,” Orr said. “I invite all citizens to express their thoughts, ideas and concerns with the goal of improving our great town.”

Orr lives in Braselton with his wife, Garol, and two daughters.
