City Spotlight on Auburn: Mark Your Calendars for a Spectacular September

The latest news from Auburn.

August takes one last gasp in the city of Auburn with a farmers' market hosted at R.H. Burel Pavilion from 2 to 8 p.m. Aug. 31 before making way for what promises to be a spectacular September.

Aside from the standard, official city business of a city aouncil business meeting Sept. 1 and a city council workshop on Sept. 15 (in the Auburn City Council chambers beginning at 7 p.m. both nights), the forecast for September is slowly descending temperatures and high levels of fun. Be sure to mark your calendars to take part in the following:

  • Auburn Cruisers Car Show — Head downtown Sunday, Sept. 4 to see what some of your neighbors have been hiding inside their garages. This event takes place from 1 to 5 p.m.
  • Farmers' market — This weekly event is hosted at R.H. Burel Pavilion and provides Barrow residents with a chance to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables directly from local farmers and growers in the community. Markets will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 7, 14, 21 and 28.
  • Community yard sale — These monthly events present the good people of Auburn the ideal opportunity to go treasure hunting. Yard sales present a great variety of sellers lined up with all kinds of merchandise from clothes, household items, antiques, bric-a-brac, toys and more. There's no telling what you'll find. This month’s yard sale takes place downtown from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.
  • — After you’ve had a chance to dig through the wares at the community yard sale, be sure to pop by “The Cottage” at 1396 Third Ave. for the Harvest of Art Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10. Presented by the Georgia Piedmont Arts Center, this street festival will showcase some of the area’s most talented artists and crafters in addition to family-friendly activities, festival food and live entertainment.
  • Movies in the Park — Why not spend the whole day in downtown Auburn? Between the community yard sale that morning, and the Harvest of Art Festival that afternoon — it seems only right to stay in the heart of Auburn on Saturday, Sept. 10, when the stars come out and neighbors descend on R.H. Burel Park for another installment of Movies in the Park. Come enjoy the action-adventure classic Raiders of the Lost Ark starring Harrison Ford — the movie begins at dusk. Haul out your beach chairs, blankets and a picnic for a fun family tradition within the community. The city will host a concession stand selling drinks, popcorn and candy. Take advantage of a great movie deal special — two drinks, two bags of popcorn and two candies for only $3.
  • 20th annual Auburnfest — As long as you’ve got your calendars out, go ahead and flip the page to October. Be sure to put big gold stars on Saturday, Oct. 15, and Sunday, Oct. 16 for Auburnfest 2011!

Don’t forget — prospective candidates for municipal office will be able to qualify for the upcoming November elections from Aug. 29 through Sept. 2 at .
