Get Ready to Have a Ball in Auburn

Parks and Leisure will launch a youth athletic program through a new collaboration with i9 Sports.

The city of Auburn is proud to announce its partnership with i9 Sports to provide youth athletic programming for its pint-sized populace.

Registration is now open online at the i9 Sports website for coed winter basketball for boys and girls ages 4 through 9 and coed winter T-ball/baseball for boys and girls ages 3 through 6. The deadline for registration for either sport is Nov. 3, 2011.

Basketball teams are organized into divisions based on the age of the child, and each team will consist of seven to 10 players. The eight-week season runs Dec. 3 through Feb. 25, with no activities Dec. 17 through Jan. 1.

The fun kicks off with a jamboree, followed by six regular season games and one final game. All games and practices will be hosted in the Auburn Elementary Gymnasium at 1334 Sixth Ave. in Auburn between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturdays, lasting no more than 1½ hours. Practices of 30 to 45 minutes will be held before each game — requiring only a one day per week commitment from busy parents and players.

T-ball/baseball teams will meet at Jack City Sports Center at 1152 Auburn Road in Dacula. Practices and games will take place either indoors or outdoors depending on the weather. The season also begins Dec. 3 and ends no later than Feb. 25, consisting of two practices and six regular season games. All games and practices will be held on Saturdays, lasting no more than 1 hour to 1½ hours. Start times range from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All players are required to have a baseball glove. No activities will take place Dec. 17 through Jan. 1.

Each baseball or basketball player will receive an i9 sports jersey and an end-of-the-season trophy, and will have a weekly opportunity to win a sportsmanship medal. No matter the sport, all i9 Sports experiences incorporate an emphasis on fun that puts the kids’ needs first, as well as a dedication to safety, a commitment to inclusiveness, which means everyone plays, every game, and a focus on basic skills, sportsmanship, team play and fairness.

Coming spring 2012 — the city of Auburn and i9 Sports will offer coed flag football and coed soccer.
