Barrow Weather Watch for Sunday, July 1, 2012

A head advisory and a Code Red Smog Alert are in effect today.

National Weather Service heat advisory is in effect through 9 p.m. today.

A heat advisory means a period of dangerous heat is expected, and a combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create heat index readings of at least 105 degrees and warm overnight temperatures.

Heat index values peak during the afternoon through mid-evening.

The National Weather Services advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and stay out of direct sunlight. The elderly, young children and people with heart conditions are most at risk during extreme heat and friends, relatives and neighbors should check on those who could be at risk.

Intense heat can trigger heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles even with windows down.
