Barrow Today for Wednesday, May 2: Drug Court Commencement Ceremony Today

This event is a first for the Piedmont Judicial Circuit's drug court.

Some of the participants in a program for individuals facing drug-related charges will celebrate today. 

The Piedmont Judicial Circuit, which consists of Barrow, Banks and Jackson counties, will hold its first drug court commencement ceremony at 6 p.m. today at the , 652 Barrow Park Drive in Winder.

The graduation ceremony is open to the public, and Judge Jason J. Deal of the Northeastern Circuit as keynote speaker.

The drug court offers participants an alternative to traditional sentencing and incarceration. They must successfully complete counseling programs, health and community activities and vocational training, as well as other requirements. The reports the program was started in spring 2010 and requires participants to voluntarily commit to at least 18 months.

I grew up in a Winder where doors were not locked and the town was full of folks shopping! SometimesRead More a moonshiner would get caught or the parking meter would run out of time and one would get a parking ticket by one of the three cops in town! Now I keep a weapon handy because of voices and footsteps on the pavement at night! Where are these people coming from and going to after one o'clock in the morning? Why does it take so long for a policeman to show up after a call is made,if they show up at all? I've watched nice homes on my street turn into dumps. They are rented by owners who are only interested in the money and not the quality of people who are renting. Yeah, I keep a weapon and it's loaded for a thief or prowler! When seconds count a cop is only several minutes away,if at all!
