Barrow County Habitat for Humanity Holds Groundbreaking for New Home

A group of volunteers joined the family that will move into the completed house to symbolically break ground on Monday, Sept. 19.

Starting with just walls, Barrow County Habitat for Humanity is planning the build for its 14th house.

A group of volunteers joined the family that will move into the completed home — Susan Christian and her daughter, Tabitha — to symbolically break ground on Monday, Sept. 19, shovels in hand.

The three-bedroom, one-bath home will be built at 921 Lochwolde Lane in Bethlehem in the Lochwolde subdivision, and volunteers plan to begin clearing the property Saturday in preparation for construction.

Volunteers will work one day a week and every Saturday until the house is completed — Barrow Habitat's executive director, Paul Brown, said he hopes to have the family moved in before Christmas.

For that to happen, the organization is in need of volunteers, particularly skilled laborers with construction experience ranging from plumbing and HVAC to concrete and roofing.

Monetary donations are also welcomed and needed.

“We’ll build on faith,” Brown said during the groundbreaking ceremony, “and we’ll get (Susan) in.”

According to the organization’s website, Habitat homeowners are selected based on their level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay the home loan.

“I can’t wait for her to get in,” Connie Lane, a volunteer with Barrow County Habitat for Humanity and the family’s advocate, said of Susan Christian. “She’s the sweetest lady.”
