Around the Region: Elderly Woman Struck by SUV, Serial Burglar Nabbed and Accused Furniture Thief Arrested

 — Canton–Sixes Patch

A woman who appeared to be in her late 60s was flown to Grady Hospital in Atlanta after an SUV struck her in Canton's Great Sky subdivision Aug. 29.

spokesman Tim Cavender said the agency, along with the , found the woman in the middle of the road.

The woman, who has severe head trauma, is listed in critical condition, Cavender said.

 — Midtown Patch

Thanks to the vigilance of Virginia Highland residents, an accused burglar is now behind bars.

Charles Echols, 54, is in the Fulton County Jail facing 14 charges related to burglary, according to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office website.

“We believe he is responsible for 13 burglaries in Morningside, Midtown, Virginia Highland, North Highland, Amsterdam and Monroe,” said Atlanta Police Department spokesman Carlos Campos.

Last week, police asked residents to be on the lookout for Echols. He was wanted for suspected parole violation in connection with burglary. As the word spread on a Yahoo Group message board, VHlist, neighbors started reporting sightings of Echols.

 — Cartersville Patch

A man who shopped for furniture and electronics — but later called the store to make the $12,000 purchase — used a stolen credit card to do so,  Chief Tommy Culpepper said in a news release.

Authorities have arrested Tony Lamar Sweat, 50, of Mountain Chase Drive in Cartersville, in connection with the alleged theft from  in May.

I grew up in a Winder where doors were not locked and the town was full of folks shopping! SometimesRead More a moonshiner would get caught or the parking meter would run out of time and one would get a parking ticket by one of the three cops in town! Now I keep a weapon handy because of voices and footsteps on the pavement at night! Where are these people coming from and going to after one o'clock in the morning? Why does it take so long for a policeman to show up after a call is made,if they show up at all? I've watched nice homes on my street turn into dumps. They are rented by owners who are only interested in the money and not the quality of people who are renting. Yeah, I keep a weapon and it's loaded for a thief or prowler! When seconds count a cop is only several minutes away,if at all!
