Meet the Owner of a Local Hair Salon

Becky Dillard opened the business that bears her name eight years ago.

Becky Dillard is the face and name behind in downtown Statham, a business the Watkinsville resident opened more than eight years ago after working for the city’s mayor for a decade. Dillard takes walk-ins only and doesn’t work weekends. Dillard often goes out into the community to serve customers who are homebound.

Patch: How did you get into your line of work?

Becky Dillard: I was a stay at home mom and I went back to school and while were having a clipper class at school the guy who was doing the class happened to be the Statham mayor (Robert Bridges). I started to work for him before I ever finished school and I worked for him for 10 years before I came here and opened the shop. A lot of people don’t know that Robert was a barber.

Patch: What’s the best aspect of your job?

BD: Being self-employed I have the flexibility and I work by myself. I also paint in here. I paint murals and on canvas. It’s a big part of what I do, everything in here at once. Having the flexibility to be myself with my customers and be real with my customers. It’s just a place where I can be myself because I don’t have anyone else’s itinerary to meet.

Patch: What’s the worst aspect of your job?

BD: Seeing my customers that die is the worst aspect. You get attached to people. Cutting hair that long I’ve seen a lot of them go. That would be the worst. But getting to know people, that’s the blessing. I enjoy talking to people, but you learn a lot about people and people go through hardships, and they share stuff with you and all you can do is listen.

Patch: What are some of your hobbies outside of work?

BD: That would definitely be the painting. I have a business license in that in the county I live in and I do that on the side in here. I paint murals, commercial and residential, off of what people see in here mainly.

Patch: What is your personal business philosophy?

BD: Treating people like you would want to be treated.

Patch: Who cuts your hair?

BD: Me. I’m extremely frugal, too (laughs).

Patch: What are some of your favorite hair products?

BD: I carry Redken products and I have those, but I don’t do a big retail business. I use what I like. I have some Suave hairspray on my back bar and then I have some high dollar stuff. I just use what I like. I do use professional products also but I’m not that person that thinks they’re too good to use something because it’s Suave.
