Lowest-Scoring Barrow County Restaurants Inspected This Year

Violations include the presence of live roaches, foods held at improper temperatures and more.

No new reports for Barrow County had been posted by the Northeast Health District, so Barrow Patch looks back at some of the lowest-scoring local restaurants in 2013.

Score: 81

Violation of: 6-1A. Proper cold holding temperatures (Barbecue pork held in temperature danger zone 41 to 135 degrees in food prep sink. Corrected on site by discarding.)

  • Violation of: 6-2. Proper date marking and disposition (Ready to eat foods in reach-in cooler not date labeled. Date label all ready to eat foods with date prepared and use by or discard within seven days, i.e. Brunswick stew, barbecue pork.) 
  • Violation of: 11C. Approved thawing methods used (Improper thawing method in use at time of inspection. Barbecue pork found under hot running water. Barbecue pork found at 87 degrees. Corrected on site by discarding out of temp barbecue. Only thaw under running water at 70 degrees or below, under refrigeration or as part of the cook process.) 
  • Violation of: 18. Insects, rodents, and animals not present (Live roach observed crawling on top of pizza oven. Have pest control officer apply pesticides to prevent pests and submit invoice to health department.)

Critical violation:

  • Violation of: 2-1B. Hands clean and properly washed (An employee was observed blowing into gloves before donning them. Corrected on site by instructing employee to discard gloves and rewash hands.) 

Non-critical violations:

  • Violation of: 2-2D. Adequate handwashing facilities supplied & accessible (No paper towels at kitchen hand sink. Corrected on site by person in charge replenishing paper towels.) 
  • Violation of: 12B. Personal cleanliness (Visors used by staff prepping food. Top of head must be appropriately covered with hair net or ballcap. *REPEAT VIOLATION) 
  • Violation of: 14C. Single-use/single-service articles: properly stored, used (Single service cups not stored in sleeve or below rim of cup dispenser to protect surface.)

  • Violation of: 4-1A. Food separated and protected (Improper meat order found in two reach-in coolers and walk-in cooler — i.e. raw shrimp stored with raw chicken in bottom shelf in reach-in cooler at fry station, raw hamburger patties stored on same shelf as raw chicken in sandwich prep reach-in, cooked wings stored with raw chicken in reach-in at fry station, two packs of ready-to-eat tortillas stored on container of raw filet tips in reach-in cooler, raw hamburger patties stores with raw pork loin and eggs and raw chicken all on same shelf in walk-in cooler. Corrected on site by rearranging cooler order and going over proper order with management. Cooler order guide was posted on reach-in cooler door.)

  • Violation of: 17C. Physical facilities installed, maintained, and clean (Floor tiles in kitchen area in extremely poor repair. Floors must be smooth, non-absorbent and easily cleanable. Raw, exposed wood in numerous areas. throughout kitchen area. *REPEAT VIOLATION)

  • Violation of: 6-1A. Proper cold holding temperatures (Temperature control for safety foods — i.e. boiled eggs, grits, meatballs, coleslaw, pasta, corned beef — held in temperature danger zone, 41 degrees to 135 degrees. Corrected on site by discarding out of temp foods products.) 

Non-critical violations:

  • Violation of: 15A. Food and nonfood-contact surfaces cleanable, properly designed, constructed, and used (Double door reach-in cooler not able to maintain food products at 41 degrees or below.) 
  • Violation of: 17C. Physical facilities installed, maintained, and clean (Ceiling in two dry storage rooms not smooth or easily cleanable.)

Non-critical violations:

  • Violation of: 1-2. Person in charge present, demonstrates knowledge and performs duties (Original Certified Food Safety Manager certificate not posted. *REPEAT VIOLATION) 
  • Violation of: 12A. Contamination prevented during food preparation, storage & display (Food stored on floor surface in walk-in freezer. Food must be stored at least six inches off floor surface.) 
  • Violation of: 14A. In-use utensils: properly stored (In use ice scoops — two — stored inside ice machine with handles in food product. Corrected on site by removing handles from food product.) 
  • Violation of: 17C. Physical facilities installed, maintained, and clean (HAVC air return vent with excessive dust build-up.)
