Disney's John Carter will be a disappointment for hardcore sci-fi buffs although fans of the original Edgar Rice Burroughs stories or the short lived 70s Marvel Comics series may have a slightly more favorable take. Visually the movie is very reminiscent of the Marvel comic books but the story is basically your typical Disney princess tale: beautiful yet rebellious young princess, handsome working class hero who saves a kingdom, adorably cute animal sidekick thing, and a kingly father who just doesn't understand. Oh, and of course the dastardly villain who ultimately loves power more than beauty. To me this movie felt very much like the Disney flicks I grew up with in the 60s; some visual dazzlement mixed with a predictable plot and second tier acting. All in all not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon although you may want to wait for it to come to your local dollar theater.
