Barrow County Car Dealership is Going Green

The Barrow Economic Development Council highlighted Akins Ford's efforts in a recent newsletter.

Akins Ford in Winder has jumped on the environmentally-friendly bandwagon.

According to the Barrow Economic Development Council, the business has committed to a full energy retrofit to save thousands of dollars each month on utility costs, predicting the conversion to energy efficiency will save as much as $150,000 annually.

The dealership has replaced more than 90 skylights with a Domed Prismatic light to use daylight harvesting and more than 1,100 fixtures and 3,000 lamps to increase light levels and efficiency. HVAC units have been replaced with higher efficient systems and refuse oil furnaces have been added to reduce their natural gas consumption. A Building Automation System with an Energy Dashboard was installed to control and monitor these new technologies in one efficient system. Critical partner-experts include Frazier Service Company (energy contractor), HI Solutions (building automation), Lighting Technologies (LED) and Sunoptics (skylights).

I grew up in a Winder where doors were not locked and the town was full of folks shopping! SometimesRead More a moonshiner would get caught or the parking meter would run out of time and one would get a parking ticket by one of the three cops in town! Now I keep a weapon handy because of voices and footsteps on the pavement at night! Where are these people coming from and going to after one o'clock in the morning? Why does it take so long for a policeman to show up after a call is made,if they show up at all? I've watched nice homes on my street turn into dumps. They are rented by owners who are only interested in the money and not the quality of people who are renting. Yeah, I keep a weapon and it's loaded for a thief or prowler! When seconds count a cop is only several minutes away,if at all!
