Movie Review: Game on With ‘Battleship’

Starring Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker and Rihanna, this film hits the big screens this weekend, but will it score a direct hit with fans?

Alien invaders, massive explosions, attractive cast members and catchy dialogue are just some of the weapons in the “Battleship” arsenal.

Loosely based on the Hasbro strategy game, “Battleship” pits Earth against heavily armed alien invaders.

Peter Paras of E! Online wrote, “This is the kind of film that takes itself seriously so you don't have to.”

Paras compared the movie to another naval battle flick: “Think 'Pearl Harbor,' but with aliens and way more fun.”

Barbara Vancheri, of the Pittsburg Post Gazette, described the movie as “ ‘Iron Man’ meets ‘Terminator’ meets ‘Transformers’ meets ‘District 9’ meets ‘Battle Los Angeles’ and every other alien invasion movie but on the water.”

Vancheri added an interesting teaser at the end of her review, “Universal has asked journalists to allow moviegoers to discover some surprises near the end on their own, which is how it should be. But it may have you asking, ‘What the heck was that?’ "

Here’s what other critics had to say about “Battleship”:

“The invading aliens start off like gangbusters, but they end up resembling the Washington Generals of yore, fated to lose to the Harlem Globetrotters night after hopeless night.” – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
“ … while we wait for the movie versions of Tic-Tac-Toe and Hangman, let’s sit back and take in Battleship,’ an epic-scale military thriller that’s no great shakes, but that’s at least a tad more absorbing than the ‘Transformers at Sea’ that we expected — although it does share that film’s curious, suffocating fascination with metallic transformation.” – Bill Wine, CBS Philly
" ‘Battleship’ is big, dumb fun that knows it's big, dumb fun and enthusiastically embraces its big, dumb, fun nature.” – Christy Lemire, AP Film Critic
“ ‘Battleship’ is the worst humans-fighting-aliens movie I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen a lot of humans-fighting-aliens movies.” – Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News

“Battleship” is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence, action and destruction, and for language.
