Feb. 29 Means a Visit from Leap Day William

Has the legend of Leap Day William reached Barrow County? If it hadn't before, it has now.

Feb. 29 comes to Barrow County only once a quadrennial, so Leap Day William might not be as well known in these parts as, say, Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy.

Here's the story: Once every four years on Feb. 29, Leap Day William emerges from the Mariana Trench to trade candy for tears. Tradition calls for celebrants to wear blue and yellow clothing. Those who don't wear appropriate holiday attire risk getting poked in the eye and having their hair pulled for forgetting what clothes to wear (see video). Except in Boston, where, in addition to the Leap Day William parade and a citywide ice maze, tradition calls for people not wearing Leap Day colors to get stomped on the foot, kicked in the knee and reminded of how great the New England Patriots are.
