Patch Staff Report

This week brings Ash Wednesday and for many that means giving up something as part of their observance of Lent and Easter.

Many Roman Catholics give up something they love - chocolate, junk food, cigarettes -  for Lent, which lasts until Easter - about six weeks.

Do you plan to give something up for Lent? What will it be? If you are not a practicing Catholic, what would you give up? Share in the comment section below.

Not sure what to give up? The website www.whattogiveupforlent.com has plenty of suggestions.

According to the site:

During Lent, we decrease the things that detract us from our faith journey and increase the things that supplement it. Some of the things people decide to give up for Lent are:

- Television or their favorite show/channel
- Internet or certain websites
- Coffee or alcohol
- Desserts or sweets
- Over-shopping
- Relying on credit cards
- Bars and night clubs
- Video games
- Clutter around the house, office, etc.

Thanks Hunt for posting this. My background is Methodist/Presbyterian and I am a pastor starting a new congregation for the neighborhoods around Piedmont Park with City Church Eastside. We are protestant but we have elements of ancient Catholic tradition in the way we celebrate the season of Lent, starting with an Ash Wednesday Service.

Let me see, I can try and give up on my attack of Gay rights as a human right?

I am giving up Red Meat. Not as easy as you think and it is good for you as well. You can give up sweets but seriously do you realy eat sweets every day.

As a Catholic, it is also customary not to give something up but to add something to your life which will bring you closer to God such as reading the bible, going to church on a regular basis, tithing more, giving of your time and talents, etc.
