Toy Drive Benefiting Local Children in Need Kicks Off Today

Donations will be accepted today, as well as Saturdays Dec. 1 and Dec. 8 in the Barrow Crossing shopping center parking lot in front of the Staples store and at all Barrow County fire stations.

It's the season of giving, and firefighters with Barrow County Emergency Services are joining members from the Barrow Emergency Support Team/Community Emergency Response Team in hosting their annual “Empty Stocking” toy drive.

“All proceeds from this toy drive will again go to the Holiday Connection store,” Lieutenant Scott Dakin said in a news release. “This means that all donations will stay right here in Barrow County to help those of our neighbors that are in need this Christmas.”

The Holiday Connection is a gift store operated by Barrow County Family Connection/Communities in Schools, a collaborative in which various local agencies work together to meet the needs of Barrow County residents.

The toy drive will be held today, Dec. 1 and Dec. 8. Each Saturday, firefighters and team members will be at the Barrow Crossing shopping center parking lot in front of the Staples store from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. collecting new, unwrapped toys and monetary donations. Residents can also drop off donations at any Barrow County fire station.

“I cannot imagine being a child and waking up excited for Christmas and finding no presents, or being a parent and having to decide between feeding my child or getting them a few presents,” Dakin said. “Through the generosity of so many of our neighbors we can try and make sure these children wake up Christmas morning to unwrap presents.”

I grew up in a Winder where doors were not locked and the town was full of folks shopping! SometimesRead More a moonshiner would get caught or the parking meter would run out of time and one would get a parking ticket by one of the three cops in town! Now I keep a weapon handy because of voices and footsteps on the pavement at night! Where are these people coming from and going to after one o'clock in the morning? Why does it take so long for a policeman to show up after a call is made,if they show up at all? I've watched nice homes on my street turn into dumps. They are rented by owners who are only interested in the money and not the quality of people who are renting. Yeah, I keep a weapon and it's loaded for a thief or prowler! When seconds count a cop is only several minutes away,if at all!
