Statham Native is Featured Speaker at Veterans Day Ceremony in Athens

Retired U.S. Army Col. Michael Steele told brief stories about soldiers he has known who were severely wounded or killed in Iraq.

A Statham native, retired U.S. Army Col. Michael Steele, was the featured speaker Monday at a Veterans Day ceremony in Athens.

Steele spoke to a crowd of people gathered at Oconee Hill Cemetery to remember the sacrifice and service of America's military veterans. He commanded a Ranger company in Somalia and was awarded a Bronze Star for heroism during the "Blackhawk Down" disaster.
