Moms Talk: Airsoft Guns

Two incidents within the past month involving Barrow County students who brought these non-lethal weapons to school sparked this week's discussion.

Welcome to this week's Moms Talk. Settle in as we start a conversation today on children bringing Airsoft guns to school. Before I begin, you can read about the two recent incidents that sparked this discussion:

I know everyone has their own opinions on Airsoft guns — air-powered weapons that operate like BB guns but fire softer projectiles that are considered non-lethal. I think this type of weapon — if you let your child play with them — should be left at home at all times. I, personally, let my children play with Nerf guns, play dart guns, etc. But I would never let them take anything like this to school.

As a parent, it is my responsibility to check my child before letting them leave for school. This includes backpacks, lunch boxes, pants pockets, jackets, etc. In my opinion, if you are checking your child there should be no way the gun should arrive anywhere near the school.

I do understand some mornings you're rushed and you don't have time to check everything. But by getting a child in the habit of checks, they should know not to bring anything like this on school property.

I think parents should talk to their children about the real dangers of Airsoft guns, as well as real guns. Even at a young age. If you do not make them aware of the real dangers they will never know that someone could be hurt or possibly even killed. Because to a child all guns look the same. I would love to hear your input on this topic.
