Meet the Owner of a Local Dance Studio

Janice Cater is the owner of , a dance studio in Winder that has been in business for 27 years. Studio One was located in the Quality Food shopping center for 22 years before Cater moved to her Snodon Village location off Athens Street.

Patch: How did you get into your line of work?

Janice Cater: My line of work began when I was 7 years old in Nashville, Tennessee. A friend of mine said they took dance. I had tried a couple of other things that didn’t pan out and so I started dancing and that’s all I ever wanted to do. I veered a couple of times but I never really wanted to do anything but teach.

Patch: What’s the best aspect of your job?

JC: Working with the children, seeing them grow in confidence and seeing them years later being productive, arts-loving adults.

Patch: What’s the worst aspect of your job?

JC: The hours and the heartache and the hormones (laughs) of all the girls.

Patch: What are some of your hobbies outside of work?

JC: Oh mercy, there’s not a whole lot left. I love working outside, I love flowers. I enjoy spending time with family, and then I’m very active in my church.

Patch: What is your personal business philosophy?

JC: Treat people like you want to be treated and keep your professionalism. If they trust you as a person, and know (they’re) being treated fair, then they’re gong to stay with you longer.

Patch: What would you say is your favorite style of dance?

JC: Tap and jazz have always been my favorite, I think, because of the freedom to express yourself a little bit more and just the tempo. That’s why I hired a ballet teacher. I had a lot of ballet, but I didn’t work as hard at it, so I didn’t feel like I could take my students as far as they were capable of going.
