Make Mischief this April Fools' Day with Ideas from a Practical Joker

Here are some practical jokes that might inspire you on April Fools Day.

Smidge Boyter is a self-described practical joker.

He is so into his craft — what he calls an "obsession" — that he has compiled a website to help others make mischief through practical jokes.

On the eve of April Fools' Day, Barrow Patch directs you to Boyter's site, where his and user submitted practical jokes might inspire your own. Here are five examples of what you'll find there:

  1. Munching on plastic
A simple prank to pull on a family member, this practical joke only requires an individually packaged slice of cheese. Offer to make someone a sandwich but conveniently forget to take the wrapping off the cheese. Be sure to watch for the reaction.
  2. And the winner is ...
Another easy to pull practical joke. Have a friend call another friend or family member and, using his or her best game show host voice, announce that the call recipient has won a sweepstakes drawing for a prize and someone will knock on the door shortly with a check. Knock or ring the doorbell and announce yourself, "April Fools!"
  3. Sticky situation
Have a family member who reads the newspaper daily? Glue the pages together and see what kind of reaction you get.
  4. Repeat offender
According to Boyter, repetition can work wonders when you are trying to annoy someone with a prank. Place a sticker on a friend’s back, let them walk around with the sticker on for a while, and hopefully a few people will notice and laugh. Eventually, they themselves will notice it or some kind perso  will comment on their new accessory. Once they find the sticker and remove it, place another or the same sticker on them again in the same general location. After they find out or you tell them you are putting the stickers on them, they will be watching your every move. They will jerk at the slightest touch and be on the look out for you trying to affix any more stickers on their back. You can now act like you are pressing something on their back or shoulder but in reality you will not be placing anything on them. They will look or reach around each time you touch them to feel if you have put something on them again. Watch your friends squirm and sometimes get really upset. After doing it about five or six times they won’t even bother to look when you touch them. That’s the time to actually reattach the sticker and start the whole process over again. Try this at the mall or at festivals where there are large crowds and your friends wouldn’t want to look like a dork by wearing a sticker on their back.
  5. One of these things just doesn't belong here ...
An easy way to confuse and annoy your family a friends, simply put unexpected objects in strange places — canned foods, candy bars, pens, paperclips and other random items placed under bed sheets or left in a pillowcase, ketchup packets in purses, paper towels smashed into the bottom of a shoe, dinner rolls in a coat pocket. The possibilities are endless.
