DOT Advises Drivers of Two Winder Street Closures Overnight This Week

Find out what streets you'll want to avoid.

Overnight road work in downtown Winder this week will require two streets to be closed to through traffic.

According to the Georgia Department of Labor, work crews are still installing precast concrete slabs. Work this week will be northbound from Laura Street to Athens Street, weather permitting.

Tonight, July 29, Laura Street will be closed to through traffic as the precast concrete slabs are installed across the intersection and will re-open Tuesday morning. On Friday night, Aug. 2, Athens Street will be closed to through traffic on the gazebo side as the slabs are installed across that intersection. The street will re-open Saturday morning.

Traffic will continue to be shifted toward the courthouse side of the road as crews excavate the roadway and place the new roadbed during the daytime and set the slabs during the overnight hours all week.

During the traffic shift, there will be no street parking on the northbound side of the road from the railroad tracks to Athens Street. Sidewalk and curb and gutter construction will continue during the daytime from the railroad tracks to Athens Street.

The .72-mile, almost $5 million project along Broad Street has a completion date of July 31, 2014. The project will rebuild SR 11/Broad Street from the ground up, creating a stronger driving surface that theGDOT says will last decades. Enhancement work includes new sidewalks, curb and gutter, benches, lighting and landscaping.
