Give Burns the Boot Drive Kicks off Today in Barrow

Ten percent of each department’s total dollar amount raised is returned to the department for fire safety and burn education efforts.

Firefighters with Barrow County Emergency Services are kicking off local efforts today, Friday, Oct. 19, to support the 23rd annual "Give Burns The Boot" drive, benefiting the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation.

Efforts will continue every Friday through Nov. 2, and the department is one of more than 100 fire departments statewide joining forces to support the foundation, whose mission is to partner with fire services and the burn care community to provide fire safety and prevention education, support medical facilities and assist burn survivors in their recovery.

"Fires and burn injuries can strike anyone at any time. The Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation is working to help prevent fire-related injuries and deaths through education. In addition, the Foundation supports the burn centers in Georgia to allow them to offer the best possible treatment for the patients," said Lt. Ernest Weant, who is chairing the project for Barrow County Emergency Services.

Ten percent of each department’s total dollar amount raised is returned to the department for fire safety and burn education efforts.

To support this cause, Barrow County Emergency Services asks residents to please give generously when approached by firefighters today, Oct. 26 and Nov. 2.

I grew up in a Winder where doors were not locked and the town was full of folks shopping! SometimesRead More a moonshiner would get caught or the parking meter would run out of time and one would get a parking ticket by one of the three cops in town! Now I keep a weapon handy because of voices and footsteps on the pavement at night! Where are these people coming from and going to after one o'clock in the morning? Why does it take so long for a policeman to show up after a call is made,if they show up at all? I've watched nice homes on my street turn into dumps. They are rented by owners who are only interested in the money and not the quality of people who are renting. Yeah, I keep a weapon and it's loaded for a thief or prowler! When seconds count a cop is only several minutes away,if at all!
