You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Barrow Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

An important fact to learn first thing about Shane’s Rib Shack is that there really is a Shane. This franchise grew out of the time that Shane Thompson spent with “Big Dad,” his grandfather. Big Dad shared his secret barbecue sauce recipe with his grandson, as well as good advice: “Do what you love, and do it better than anyone else.” Shane has done his grandfather proud and his enterprise has grown up fast, from one shack in McDonough in 2002 to shacks all across America today.

Plate choices include pork, barbecue chicken, half chicken and half or full racks of ribs, and the portions are plentiful. If you can’t make up your mind, then try the Shack Sampler, which offers the best of everything. Now comes the hard part, choosing from more than 10 sides to go on your plate. Shane’s has the usual barbecue joint side items, including creamy coleslaw, baked beans and Brunswick stew, and all are delicious, but Shane's also serves up other country favorites. Also on the menu are mac-n-cheese, fried okra, potato salad, green beans, collard greens and corn on the cob. Sandwich offerings include cheeseburgers, chicken salad, smothered pork or the “Big Dad.” You know if it’s named after Shane’s grandfather, it has to be good and includes his secret barbecue sauce. Shane’s also serves up fresh salads, wings and dessert. Save room for the peach cobbler and if you grew up in the South, your childhood memories will be ignited. Shane’s aims to please everyone and there are menu items to satisfy the kids, the meat lover, the vegetarian and even customers on a gluten-free diet. Yes, there really is a Shane, and he really does know how to feed you well and make you feel at home.

108 E. May St., Winder. Open daily for lunch and dinner. 770-307-1339. Pricing: Low to moderate.
