April 23, 1935: ‘Sensational’ Case

Jury hears testimony in murder trial on this date in 1935.

Five of six witnesses testified April 23, 1935, in what The Winder News called “one of the most sensational murder cases ever heard in Barrow County for many years.” Ab Tolbert was being tried for the murder of Statham resident Joe Holliday. Witnesses said Tolbert entered a drug store where Holiday where was talking with friends and asked about the whereabouts of his daughter before allegedly shooting Holliday. A jury found Tolbert not guilty on April 26, 1935, after deliberating two hours.
