Statham "Little Free Library"

The city of Statham has a new “Little Free Library,” installed immediately adjacent to city hall on Jefferson Street. It was built by Statham residents Richard Pepper and Jim McCutcheon and painted by the ten-year old Allie Tarpley, of Auburn, AL. Miss Tarpley is the granddaughter of another Statham resident, Sylvia Tarpley.

The Statham Friends of the Library stocked the “Little Free Library” with books of several genres in hopes that users would swap out one book for another or return one after they've read it, much in the same manner as is being done in Athens and around the country. No library card is necessary, the “Little Free Library” is open seven days a week, twenty four hours a day, and there is no “due date” stamped on books when they are taken.

It is the hope of those involved in this project that more people, particularly the young, will be encouraged to read just for the sheer pleasure of it.
