DESCRIPTION:Born in Spain and currently living and working in New York an
 d Madrid\, Manolo Vald&eacute\;s is known for his paintings\, prints\, d
 rawings and sculptures\, which draw heavily from Spanish art history thr
 ough appropriating and simplifying familiar forms. Many of his subjects
 reveal art historical motifs. &ldquo\;Caballero V\,&rdquo\; for example\
 , which depicts a man on horseback\, alludes to the works of Diego Vel&a
 acute\;zquez\, the famed 17th-century Spanish court painter. &ldquo\;Reg
 ina II&rdquo\; and &ldquo\;Ada\,&rdquo\; both busts of women with elabor
 ate headdresses\, relate to the paintings of Henri Matisse. Their expres
 sionless\, blank faces contrast with the swirls of metal that recall bot
 anicals and galaxies. These three freestanding sculptures&rsquo\; size a
 nd regal presence command attention on UGA&rsquo\;s East Campus. Accordi
 ng to Vald&eacute\;s\, &ldquo\;The success of the sculpture does not dep
 end on how I envision them when I create them\; it is about how the envi
 ronment creates the sculptures.&rdquo\;
