Westminster’s 5K averages between 150 – 200 runners, including several members of both the Westminster Christian Academy and medical communities who come out each year in honor of Dr. Floyd who greatly loved and impacted these two areas.

The 5K was originally created as merely a means of offering a community-wide event, but in 2006 the school made the easy decision to hold the annual 5K in memorial to Dr. Stephen Douglas Floyd, who was struck by a car and killed while jogging in September of 2005.

In addition to being a well-known and beloved area pediatrician, Floyd and his wife Joanne are an integral part of the history of Westminster Christian Academy.  The Floyds, along with a group of other families, founded Westminster.

Together with the other founding members, the Floyd's helped create a school rich in education and grounded in the teachings of the Bible.  These truths remain today as Westminster continues to classical instruction in a covenant community.

The Floyds' children attended Westminster from kindergarten through 12th grade.  In fact, their son Daniel, a 2002 Westminster graduate, was in the school's original kindergarten class.  Three short years later, and only four months prior to his untimely death, Floyd had the joy of seeing his daughter Emily graduate from Westminster - the school he helped build.

Having served on the Board of Directors during the early years of the school, Floyd was one of the driving forces behind starting Westminster's high school.

His involvement with the school was not just behind the scenes - Floyd kept the clock at every home basketball game from the time Daniel started playing until Emily graduated.  Both him and Joanne were integral parts of all the school trips taken over the years; having planned and participated in most of them.

The lives of students at Westminster's were not the only ones Floyd greatly served.  As mentioned, he was an area Pediatrician and had operated his practice, Oconee Pediatric Associates, since the mid-1990s from its current home on Hog Mountain Road, but practiced medicine in Oconee County for more than 15 years.

Westminster’s 5K averages between 150 – 200 runners, including several members of the medical community who come out each year in honor of Dr. Floyd.

The race is part of the 2013 Black Bag Racing Series and the 2013 Run and See Georgia Grand Prix Series.

Long sleeve t-shirts are guaranteed to all pre-registered runners/walkers and are available to race day entrants as supplies last. Plenty of post-race refreshments (drinks, fruit, bagels…) will be on hand for all runner / walkers.

Chappelle Pottery awards will be given to Overall M/F, Masters M/F, and top three M/F in age groups beginning 15-19 through 75 and over. Age groups 10 and under and 11-14 will receive trophies.
