A Winder man is dead following an 11-hour standoff Monday with a SWAT team.
According to the Barrow County Sheriff's Office, 32-year-old Jesse Plunkett died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a Rosebud Lane residence.
According to a news release posted to the agency's Facebook page, a woman called 911 and said the man she lived with had a gun and had made threats toward her and himself. When the man refused to surrender to deputies who arrived on scene, the incident was treated as a barricaded gunman and SWAT personnel was dispatched. A standoff followed, during which time investigators obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect.
According to the release, negotiation attempts lasted the duration of the standoff and ultimately were unsuccessful. Investigators then executed a search warrant at the residence hoping to safely secure the firearm and the suspect. SWAT officials deployed tear gas into the residence but the subject did not exit. Upon entering the residence, SWAT officials located the man, who was already deceased.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked to conduct an independent follow up investigation.
