Winder-Barrow Grad Reported Wounded in Combat

U.S. Army Private First Class Samuel Walley, a native of Winder and the son of William K. and Connie Walley, stepped on an improvised explosive device while in pursuit of a member of the Taliban on June 6.

The Barrow Journal reports a 2010 graduate of Winder-Barrow High School had just celebrated his 20th birthday two days earlier when he was seriously injured last week in Afghanistan.

U.S. Army Private First Class Samuel Walley, a native of Winder and the son of William K. and Connie Walley, stepped on an improvised explosive device while in pursuit of a member of the Taliban on June 6, the newspaper reports.

The bomb blew off his right leg and left arm and Walley underwent surgery in Afghanistan before being transferred to a hospital in Germany. He is expected to be transferred to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., for follow-up care and rehabilitation in the next couple days.
