Vampires Return to the Big Screen in ‘Underworld Awakening’
Kate Beckinsale jumps back into her catsuit for the latest installment in the “Underworld” franchise.
Vampires and werewolves in 3D?
Vampires and werewolves in 3D? That’s right folks. See the bloody, gory action like you have never seen it before in the newest vampire warrior movie “Underworld Awakening.”
Kate Beckinsale once again dons her skin-tight catsuit to portray vampire warrioress Selene. Selene, who was imprisoned for crimes committed in previous "Underworld" films, escapes to find herself in the middle of a war in which humans are out to eradicate all vampires and werewolves.
But is the film worth watching?
Robert Johnson of My San Antonio wrote, “When a movie isn’t screened in advance for critics to prevent opening-day reviews, both critics and fans alike assume that it must be awful, and the studio knows it.”
Johnson added that while that may be the case for “Underworld Awakening,” it may also be a matter of simply not having to screen a movie that will draw theatergoers regardless.
“The vampires-vs.-werewolves franchise, which turns up every three years, has been a dependable brand since 'Underworld' debuted in 2003. With lots of action and Kate Beckinsale in leather, it can be counted on to make $20 million or so opening weekend, good enough to rank first or second on the box-office chart, and make $45-$60 million total (and more than $100 million when you factor in the global market, which loves American action films),” he wrote.
According to David Frese of the Miami Herald, when studio representatives were asked why the film was not being screened, their comment was “no comment.”
Frese would still like to see the film though.
“We loved the first one enough that we'd be willing to sit through a fourth one just out of brand loyalty. Plus, we have a soft spot in our hearts for gun-toting vampires,” he wrote.
Do you have a soft spot for gun-toting vampires? Do you plan to see “Underworld Awakening”? Tell us in the comments.
