Several Barrow County Homes Damaged by Fire This Week
The cause of one fire is still under investigation, but a second fire was determined to have been caused by improper disposal of a cigarette.
Just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, communication officers with Barrow County Emergency Services received a 911 call reporting a fire in the 100 block of Alicia Drive. Upon arrival of firefighters, fire was found in the garage and had extended into the attic. Firefighters started an aggressive attack and kept the fire from spreading further into the house.
Engine 7, Engine 3, Engine 4, Med 4, Med 7 and Battalion 1 responded to this scene. The fire caused extensive damage to the home and garage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
At 4:13 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, communication officers received a 911 call reporting a structure fire in the 600 block of Cavern Springs.
“When firefighters arrived we found heavy fire condition at the front of the home,” Battalion Chief Mike Stoops said in a news release. “The fire had already extended into the roof line of the home.”
Engine 1, Engine 6, Med 1, Med 6 and Battalion 1 responded to this call. Firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control from the outside of the home, but fire and smoke caused extensive damage. Two adults were displaced as a result of this fire.
The fire investigation team determined the cause of the fire was improper disposal of a cigarette, which ignited pine straw that was around the foundation of the home.
“We want to remind citizens when discarding smoking materials that they need to ensure the material is completely extinguished and placed in a container designed for cigarette disposal,” Public Information Officer Lieutenant Scott Dakin said in the release.
Barrow County Emergency Services said a home was destroyed Monday, Feb. 4, by fire.
