A suspected shoplifter recently ran from employees at the Winder Publix and, in his haste to get away, dropped his wallet with his ID inside, according to an incident report. 

A deputy with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the supermarket off Monroe Highway about 11 a.m. June 16. The deputy had been advised the suspect had left the store running southbound on Ga. Highway 11 and was being pursued by employees. While the deputy was unable to locate anyone in the area who matched the suspect's description, the man had dropped his wallet, ID inside, and a backpack.  

When the deputy returned to the store and showed the loss prevention officer the ID inside the wallet, the employee confirmed it was the suspect. 

The loss prevention officer told the deputy the suspect was observed placing four boxes of Coricidin down into the front of his clothing before taking a drink from a cooler near a checkout lane. According to the report, the suspect paid for the drink but did not attempt to pay for the medicine inside his clothing. Once the drink was purchased, the suspect began to leave the store and forgot to pick up his drink on the way out. After returning for his beverage, he then exited the front of the store followed by the loss prevention officer. Two store employees were also waiting outside to confront the man, who started to run away. 

While attempting to stop the suspect, the loss prevention officer grabbed hold of his backpack, which came off his shoulders, and the suspect dropped his wallet when he began to flee.

According to the incident report, the deputy intended to take out a warrant for the suspect.

The stolen medication was valued at $22.76.
