Superintendent Says Middle School Teacher Arrested Wednesday No Longer Employed by School System

Channel 2 reports the woman was a sixth-grade math teacher accused of arranging the sale of methadone and Xanax to an 18-year-old friend who later died.

A Winder-Barrow Middle School teacher who was arrested Wednesday is no longer employed by the school system, Superintendent Wanda Creel said in an e-mail Thursday afternoon.

The e-mail stated the teacher is charged with distribution/solicitation with an electronic device, reckless conduct and criminal intent to distribute methadone. According to the e-mail, an ethics complaint is being filed with the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.

Channel 2 News reports the teacher is 37-year-old Emily Smith, who taught sixth grade math. The report says Smith was arrested after allegedly arranging the sale of methadone and Xanax to an 18-year-old friend who later died. Click here to watch the full report.

More information will be posted when it becomes available.

I loved ms.jones to death. She was an amazing teacher I am truly in shock I don't even feel like this is real. Of course it is though. She was a great and very social teacher who cares alot for us students I will try to remember only the good things about her I hate that picture of her she was a very pretty woman that picture is not what she really looks like.

methadone(or heroin) and xanax kills alot of people: anna nicole smith and her son, a great football player for UT (about to start with Alabama), and countless others. I can't believe this teacher was a one-stop-shop for this deadly drug combination.

The last I heard, in this country a person is innocent until PROVEN GUILTY BY A JURY OF HIS/HER PEERS. In my opinion, an INTELLIGENT person following the media's reporting of this case will have heard and read all the untrue and contradictory facts being reported (for instance, that Ms. Smith was fired and then that she resigned) and will have decided to withhold opinions until the case has reached its conclusion in a court of law. Ms. Thompson, I ask you, punished for what? It hasn't been proved that Emily has done ANYTHING wrong. So if you ever find yourself accused of a crime, I personally promise not to condemn you until I know all the facts--not that it should matter to you, just wanted you to know.

Practice what you preach. That comment you made about the 18yr old girl was very unthoughtful! Did you know her? How do you know she was a heroine addict? If i were the parent of the deceased i would take offense to that comment. So why don't you be careful and thoughtful about your comments.

I know the 18 year old as well as that teacher! being that said I know that 18 year old would be sick over the allegations brought upon Ms. Smith. Granted you don't know what the situation was. That comment about the teen was totally harmless compared to all the comments that have been made about that teens best friend.

Annette,

I would never give someone that I "Cared Deeply" for methadone. And I for SURE would never give them methadone AND xzanex to mix together. As an educator and a grown woman- Emily should have known better than to help this young girl acquire this deadly combination. I do believe this poor girl probably needed help- but it was not the help that Emily provided.
