Should the President Attend Concert Featuring Rapper Who Once Sang Anti-American Song?

The president plans to attend a concert that includes PSY, the Korean "Gangnam Style" rapper who once sang about murdering American soldiers "slowly and painfully."

A furor arose recently when it was learned that President Barack Obama would be attending a traditional Christmas concert this year that includes an appearance by PSY, the Korean rapper who has become a media sensation with his song “Gangnam Style.” The fallout is over anti-American sentiments PSY espoused in a song back in 2004 with words that advocated killing American soldiers and their families “slowly and painfully.”

A petition objecting to the president's attendance that went up on the White House petition website was promptly removed, according to an article in The Daily Mail. It was reported to have “violated the terms of participation,” although it is not clear what terms those were.

Veterans and families of American soldiers reportedly took to the airwaves and the Twitttersphere urging the president not to attend the concert or to have PSY scrapped from the lineup. So far, it appears neither is going to happen. The White House has reportedly confirmed that the president will be in attendance, as is tradition, and the Korean rapper remains on the lineup. PSY has since apologized for his 2004 anti-American lyrics.

What do you think? Should everyone let bygones be bygones or should the president ask that PSY be struck from the lineup as a term of his attendance?

The ones who are anti-Americans are the people who continue to put out the right-wing crapola. Disagree all you want with the President, but do it with substance based on facts not incredibly wrong and destructive characterizations. He's your President, too, and you are not a good citizen to show such blatant disrespect for the office. Such childish drivel from sore losers is perpetuating the unnecessary and harmful rhetoric that only serves to divide the nation. Too bad you have to live with your hatred for 4 more years, but maybe you deserve that, just based on this post alone.

We are free to post about the situation as we appraise it, just as the administration is free in its attempt to proclaim a mandate, after losing 10 MILLION voters that he carried in 2008. He is NOT a ruler, even if he claims to do so or be one by executive order.

This outcry by no means disrespects the office, but merely points out that he HASN’T in fact HEARD EVERYONE as endlessly claimed. The “fun” that you call disrespect hasn’t even BEGUN yet.

R, the posters on here disrespect the POTUS. I didn't say the protesters don't have a right to their outcry. How do you think one person can possibly please everyone simultaneously, or should the President only please the ones who didn't vote for him? I believe the man has a lot more important things to do than make a bigger issue out of this moment in time.

Maybe even enforce a law or two that are ALREADY on the books and COMPELLING administration STAFF to settle outstanding tax issues FIRST.

If logic is conservative right-wing rhetoric, I apologize...

YES he was re-elected with 10 MILLION less than voted for him the FIRST time so I guess he did give us "Change we could believe in" after-all.

(PS. When you LOSE your own voters, that's something to note as a take away ...)

As to who he should please:
This is the USA and he is the President, NOT a twit performing at a Garden Party.

Just cause he can't please everyone doesn't mean he should just please himself ...

And here's one for the crowd.

The President felt it was necessary to take several states to court when they CHOSE to pass legislation that MIRRORED Federal regulations / Laws. So now we have 2 states that legalized Marijuana, AGAINST standing Federal law and there is NO action in the courts by this Administration's DOJ ...

Regardless of one's position on Marijuana issue itself, its entertaining to see FEDERAL GOVERNMENT suing states that are trying to assist in the ENFORCEMENT of federal law, but no action is taken when they break same ...

Consistency - the lack thereof is the new "leading from behind".

So I guess its time for the 21 Blunt salute...

R, you're a busy guy at such a late, or early hour. Voters are impatient. Some of them bought the RW rhetoric that President Obama was supposed to fix 8 years of failed policy immediately. Also, the right-wing faction took off from the Palin implosion and ran with her ridiculous talking points. Fox channel is played in all the doctor, dentist, hospital waiting rooms all around here, and probably most of the rest of the South and square states. That was a big influence. No matter, he won, which is what matters. The President wasn't performing at the "garden party". It's traditional for him to attend that event. If he hadn't gone there would have been an uproar, too, and it would have been from your people. Those maryjane laws are new. You don't know what the DOJ is planning. I hope you aren't inferring what it looks like with your "21" salute. That's traitorous.

He has praised singers that advovate killing cops and now American soldiers. he is not a president of all the people - didn't anyone know that? Honor is what is missing from the office of the presidency. I miss it.
Bush fasted sweets as long as our men were in harm's way so that his focus might always be on them when he made a decision. He didn't take lavish vacations at the taxpayers expense - he stayed at his ranch in Texas because it saved money and made him available. He has visited soldiers in hospitals WITHOUT CAMERAS AND PUBLICITY. I could go on where it concerns honor. This rapper represents those who voted for him, nothing else, and that is sad to me.
I think he should be focusing on the important business of government right now. Not going would send the message that he is serious about the American people and ther crisis they face because of his policies. Come Jan. 1, all of his policies will begin coming to fruition and our taxes are going through the roof; we are in a crisis. A better message would be, "Sorry, I'd like to attend, but I've got to work".

Cowboy, here's how. It wasn't a mandate, it was too slim a margin for that. It's hard to beat an incumbant, especially an incumbant that begs to finish what he started. People wanted to give him that chance (well, they fell for that line). Well, he'll get that chance, and maybe then people will see what these policies will do. When no one can afford their light bill because so much of their money goes to the federal government, maybe then they'll see. Of course, it will be blamed on republicans which is a cop out (that's the plan right now). What's sad is that people will believe that and obama knows it! I feel they are being played, but no one can play you without your permission. My question is, how did we get to this fiscal cliff? Obama policies! Hello?? Really? Tell us why we should feel different? There is NO constitutional right to vote in a presidential election yet the majority of LIVING, voters in America choose a President who clearly prefers to have our citizens on the dole rather than working in the private sector.

People are born dumb but people choose to be stupid. Liberals were on target when it came to Romney. Republicans or Conservatives keep making the same mistakes backing the guy with the "R". Unfortunately, the "R" guys have sucked and we choose what we feel is the best of the two evils. We as a Nation need (or should have found) to find a Libertarian in between person that gives and takes. There's no such thing as a perfect human nor perfect world.

Obama and those who claim to back him choose to be blind and stupid or they too are choosing what they feel is the less of two evils. Otherwise they are just lying.

So, the President should dis the rest of the performers for something one entertainer (whom he didn't personally book for the concert) did 8 years ago, and ignore a worthy children's charity. You people have your priorities out of whack.

"Obama traditionally attends the ‘‘Christmas in Washington’’ concert of carols and songs to benefit Children’s National Medical Center. The 31st installment is scheduled for Sunday evening at the National Building Museum, and to be hosted for a second year by comedian Conan O'Brien.

Other scheduled performers include Diana Ross, Demi Lovato, Scotty McCreery, Chris Mann of ‘‘The Voice’’ fame and ‘‘Smash’’ star Megan Hilty."

I don't think the president should dis the rest of the performers, just Psy. We have freedom of speech and Psy was certainly free to express his without being jailed for it. But, as with the Dixie Chicks, he shouldn't expect to get away with not having to face the consequences. Barack Obama is the president of this country, I don't see it being a smart move by TNT to dis him in favor of Psy. If they did, they might find themselves on the receiving end of consequences as well - and I would certainly support that. I believe that, as the president of this country, Obama should take a stand. I think it would be very much appreciated by U.S. military members and their families. Psy might do well to remember his own freedoms came from the U.S. military too.

Sharon, this President has taken many stands for and done many things in support of the military and veterans. The benefit to the Children's National Medical Center should take precedence over politics, any day. What would you have him do? Walk out when Psy comes on stage? Give an anti-Psy press conference? Not go to the concert and disappoint others who want to see him there? The man apologized. Is he not to be forgiven? If we never forgive our enemies - Japan, Germany, Italy - we won't overcome the world's problems. There will probably be a statement from the President to address this issue. Look for it. The President was put in this spot, most likely inadvertently, and he will handle it with wisdom and grace. He may even treat it for the non-troversy that it is. Patch Staff should do a better job of presenting a fair and complete account on articles like this one. There was not one mention of the reason for the concert or names of the host and other performers. I know the more controversy that can be stirred up, the better for advertisers, the better for Patch, but just once in a while it would be nice to see a pro-Obama or pro-Democratic column. Or even, just one that is balanced. Just now and then. I believe you could find quite a few good reports to make, and you might even have more rousing discussion threads. For sure, most of the readers won't like that, thus more readers and comments. (And the Dixie Chicks were spot on.)

When a question is asked, we welcome the discussion from both sides of the argument. For my part, I believe the president was duly elected and has the power of the office to back him, as he should, in this instance too. But I do know that it is tough to have to continually defend someone you supported, but that really is just the way it goes. I'm sure supporters of past presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush fully understand those frustrations. As far as Psy, I hope that you are right and that at the very least the president does address his past behavior. I agree, we should forgive our enemies - it's just so much harder to accept Psy's apology when it only comes now when big money is on the line.

Well, Sharon, maybe I haven't been reading Patch long enough to have experienced any left-leaning articles. Perhaps it's just a perspective issue, but it sticks out like a sore thumb to me. I'm not frustrated as much as perplexed as to why people who complain about how America has gone down hill get on these threads and make the most disrespectful, unnecessary comments. Venting is one thing, but the ugliness that shows up here is often hard to get beyond. Obviously, they don't see that they're part of the problem. How can we expect Congress to work out solutions when we the people can't have a civil online discussion. You can't dictate to that, of course, because free speech is our right. It's disturbing to read what people are capable of thinking and writing. I sure hope their actual behavior doesn't reflect those attitudes. The name calling and insulting coupled with outright political propaganda is what is dangerous. I am heartened to see the comments from brave people who are willing to take the heat and venture on here to counter. (Not myself - brave, that is - I'm just a glutton for punishment.) Hopefully, most can see through that stuff. I suspect there are many readers who never post a comment. That's both good and bad. Maybe people on my side of the political aisle are more content and less prone to rant and rage.

Hear hear Sharon! Couldn't have said it better. And Jennifer, the nani nani boo boo attitude proves the point of what we've been saying about the current electorate that we have now. Thanks for the illustration. Instead of making fun and calling names, maybe actually take into consideration what people are saying. Our OPINION is that we think it would be nice if he showed some respect for the people he works for (yes, he works for us) by representing all of us. If someone advocates the slow and painful death of our American soldiers and he is commander in chief over them, then he should politely say that he would rather not since it might be demeaning to some of our citizens. But he has shown that he is only president to the ones he chooses rather than all citizens.

Tammy, when you get that govt.-grant degree, maybe you can apply for a job at the WH and be the President's personal adviser and speech writer. The current electorate out-voted you. The President shows the people who have tried to take him down an incredible amount of respect, which is not returned. You're quite talented in your right-wing propaganda, but right-wing propagandists are a dime a dozen and not much in demand these days.

R, that's a simplistic analysis. The President got much more done than the health care law, which a number of presidents tried but failed to accomplish. The law will be improved - that's why we have to gain the House in 2014. The law was passed in 2010 but won't be fully implemented until 2014. And, by the way, Congress wrote the law, not the President. That's the way it's done. They write, he signs or vetoes.

@GGY
We are somewhat limited for in-depth presentations around here, so lets keep it entertaining...

Simplistic? Not really, sadly far more accurate. They write it? Outsource it maybe, for if they ACTUALLY created it, then they would know what's in it BEFORE they voted to pass it, don't you think? But we KNOW they "didn't build that" ...

Accomplished much? Why certainly!

Walked firearms into Mexico ...
Sued states for daring to pass laws and regulations that are based solely on existing FEDERAL requirements and then had the audacity to attempt to support the FEDs in enforcement thereof... The very laws that our President voluntarily allowed himself to be sworn to uphold...

The UNLAWFUL presence of several the President's own FAMILY, here without legal visas - pushed off into the twilight...
(Makes one long for the days of Billy Carter)

The creation of the "virtual" executive order process. Policy guidelines that are conveyed verbally - without any legally binding text. When have you EVER heard a law student or a lawyer tell ANYONE "Don't put that in Writing"? Ask a REAL Lawyer how that works out in the overwhelming number of cases where it was applied and they'll share about the type of person that works way...

Who can take a sunrise

R, you're right about the outsourcing of bill writing by Congress - ALEC.
F&F was a program started during the Bush admin. They may have renamed it.
Pelosi was talking to reporters bombarding her with questions, saying they will know what's in it when it passes because bills often change before they become law. If lawmakers didn't read or know what was in it when they passed it, the onus is on them. I'm not a legal professional and neither are most Americans. The President is not the DOJ, but he is a lawyer. Are you? You don't think Republican presidents and veeps ever used executive orders, written or "virtual" that you claim? Cheney rewrote the VP job description. You and I will never agree, so there's not much point to this, is there? I think everyone else has left the thread.

Aaron Hunter, my son was there. They found yellow cake and underground weponry hidden. They found magazines stacked a mile high (used for propaghanda-take a guess which magazines). None of that would have happened if we had not passed the buck for 8 years. It never ceases to amaze me that the people who scream the poudest on human rights are only for them as long as they are here. My son had Iraqi women weep as they told him how grateful they were to us for freeing them from a brutal murderer. One woman (through an interpreter) told him that thanks to us, her sons will not grow up under a dictator. It was worth it if just for that. Hecame back a changed man- for the better. Oh, and keep your eyes on Syria. Remember when the democratic congress kept stalling (basically telling them where we were going to search next)? That border was being used big time. In 2016, Obama will still be blaming Bush and the same idiots will believe ever word he says. These bone heads will never understand patronage and individual responsibility.

And we think that our president doesn't have a responsibility how he is seen in the world? that's what he gets paid for- not to go on yet another vacation (they are watching that too).
And another thing, when the woman was thanking my son, she also thanked our president (by name- bush) for being brave and having the courage to free them. Imagine how it must have felt to her as she watched her family (her father and two uncles and a brother) get slaughtered by a brutal dictator and we were over here, during the 90's, debating whether it is ok or not for a sitting president to get "serviced" in the oval office. I suppose we do owe an apology to some foreign people, but not to their leaders - to their people.

Black people have always voted Democrat in the 90+ percentile. I am sure you have heard this before but you folks keep saying your nonsense to help convince youselves that black people just vote for color of skin.

Fact....your comment is racist. What you are saying in translation is...Black people are dumb, cannot understand the facts and just are simply following the pack.

How about the fact that with Obama running...Black people have heard White Republicans disrespect the President by calling him the "Food Stamp" president, Learning that Perry had a ranch called "N-Word Head", Gingrich saying that HE could teach blacks how to improve their lives and the never ending racist nonsense that Rush Limbaugh...The token saint of racist republicans spew on a daily basis.

If you and folks like you want the black vote then tell you folks to stop with the racist nonsense. Black folks are not stupid. They will never vote for people who hate them.

But hey...keep saying....Black people only voted for Obama because he is black aka They are soooo stupid because they don't understand the facts...

GGY- Elections do not determine America's path. Elections are an indicator of what America has become. Our way can be determined by America's people and it is up to the American people to stand up and DO something to change what is going on. The Government should be a product of American citizens, not the other way around. The present narcissist in the driver's seat is a product of our Government. It's like those old Terminator movies when the computers take over and try to destroy those who created them.
We have become so reliant on the Feds (and State government for that matter) that we are becoming dominated by dependency on it rather than on ourselves, and it has taken over, it, and Zombies like you.
That's why there is no Shop Class in High School anymore, the Government does not want us to be able to do anything for ourselves and this has expanded to include thinking. They want us in "knowledge (gross mislabel)" industries so we can be programmed. They would much rather our youth sit like Zombies in front of TV and their X-boxes thinking they are doing something viable, while in reality they are wasting precious, countless hours that should be spent learning how to become real men and women.
I have news for you though, those who can perform will always triumph over those who "can't".

As far as Southerners still fighting the civil war, they deserve to. The Federal Government royally screwed them and then got away with claiming the whole thing was over slavery, this while Sherman owned slaves at the same time he was burning Atlanta. Grant didn't even release his slaves until 3 years AFTER the emancipation proclamation while Lee released his slaves (which he inherited, he never purchased one) three years before the war was even over. Then, Lincoln was in the process of working out the details for shipping all the ex-slaves away from the US because he said they were not fit to mix with Whites. What I was taught in school about the civil war was complete BS, for one reason, the winner of the war gets to write history.

I don't call her names. I do reply to her comments, but not all because I can't bear to read many of them. I disagree with her. I despise snark. If she doesn't want my comments she should clean up her style. You're so gallant. But watch out, Tammy doesn't like off-topic. I just got my come-upance from her.

That's why we are American's. We do forgive. The cold war is over too! Talk is easier than war-so lets talk to our enemies, whether it's Putin, the taliban, or this communist singer. How many millions of dollars to keep Isreal and Egypt from fighting. Money is sometime cheaper than blood. Maybe this singer now has a different opnion of the world since he has left Korea. Maybe we would too if we went to Iran!

Truth is, it matters not at all if he attends this function or doesn't. He has an unrepentant terrorist as a friend of his, and that's never mentioned. Compared to somebody like that, what's the big deal about somebody that wants to slowly kill our troops?

And it's not like we as Americans really care about any of this stuff, anyway. I'm thinking that saying that American troops should be tortured and killed would count as sedition if you're a citizen and terrorism if not, but he gets to come in and out of our country as he sees fit. And Racer's right - he may profess to have changed his opinion (I don't know that he has, but it would be prudent for him to do so) but I seriously doubt he has. And if he has, it's only because he wouldn't want to kill troops that are coming from the country where his bread is buttered.

But yes, he should go to the benefit. But he should probably let it be known that he disagrees with Psy performing and ask for him to be removed from the lineup (he is the President, after all - I'm sure they would accomodate him) but I doubt he will. This is, after all, the Teflon President - nothing sticks...

Should he go? Why doesn't somebody ask the brave men and women who are in our armed services, those on the front line, those who are doing the most sacrificing, those who are acting, instead of just talking, those who won't be there Christmas morning to see there small child open his or her Christmas present, those who's families don't know if they will ever see them again?
I wonder what they would think and I think I know the answer.
PSY is just what his name says and not worth a single butt-hair off any one of our fighting men or women. And we wonder if Obama should go. He will go, and his voters will think he is cool, and they will feed the narcissistic beast, and Obama phones will fly out of his butt while free internet rains from the sky. And the people will say, "Yeah man!"

You have quoted me plenty and used my initials. You have no beef. You just don't like someone countering you. That's what these forums are about. RX, I was listening to Mike Huckaby this afternoon (since they took Dave Merlino and Rusty Humphries off of WGST), and he told of a woman he knew that had 3 kids by 3 different daddies. She was on section 8 housing, food stamps-the whole nine yards. Well, she gained some new insight into life and began having convictions about working. Well, not working and on government assistance gave her a place to live, food and programs for her children, and working minimum wage kept her just a smidge enough above the poverty line so that she could no longer get assistance. By the time she paid to have someone watch her kids, she barely scraped by. He made the point that the system seems designed to make reliance on the government more profitable, penalizing a person desiring to work and do for themselves. Need reform really bad, not more money creating more dependence. Something wrong with that system.

Yeah, it is easy to get off on the subject matter (real subjects) since very few post good stories anymore. I guess they get tired of it turning into a bash fest. Soon, most of the people that can carry on a conversation will go elsewhere since the their stories that they worked hard on end up with lines and lines of bashing people personally (and those people tolerated). In facat , it seems that way now,. hard to fid anyone on here that were regulars. Differing viewpoints is one thing, even polite sarcastic humor, but posts that do nothing constructive but to put down another will be all that's left, and that's a shame.

You can't subdue free speech opinions without going down a dangerous path. If you're bothered by certain articles or someone's postings in response, you have a choice not to read them, not to participate. When you prohibit a reader's opinion on an OPINION board with a column that is inviting varying viewpoints, controversy even, you're denying their Constitutional rights. When people post provocative commentary, they're going to get a response. It's Christmas time. People are busy, and they may not want to expose themselves to the dark side. Cynical, doomy, gloomy, apocalyptic predictions of the fall of America are not holiday fare. It's depressing . . . a real downer.

I'm really surprised that you watch the View. I catch it occasionally and find that I enjoy it. Until I gave it a chance I couldn't stand it b/c those women usually talk all at once. The default conservative viewpoint compels one to normally finish the work before playtime...

Late-night shows? Most are after hours and wouldn't interfere with business, but when you're President, you can expect to meet with foreign leaders on behalf of the USA. The "View time" is playtime and when you consciously choose to skip meetings with our allies (work) for playtime, its a foul. Especially when you CAMPAIGNED on increasing communication with world leaders...

It's a foul that should be called regardless of race, creed, color or sexual orientation. Given the conditions within the Middle-East now, frankly it was a poor and inexcusable one. On the other hand, had it been Jeopardy! hmmmm....
