Should Celebrities Be Allowed to Jump to the Front of the Line at Polls?

Usher was reportedly allowed to jump to the front of the line and then take photos of himself while voting. Is this fair?

Fulton County says superstar Usher was a model citizen when he voted in Roswell on Tuesday. Wouldn't we all be if we were afforded the same privileges?

A local resident in Roswell told Roswell Patch the international celebrity was able to skip past long lines of waiting voters with his own photographers in tow, despite posted signs that prohibited pictures and videos to be taken in the polling area.

Bob Giordano, a spokesperson with the Fulton County Office of Communications, confirmed Usher Raymond voted in Roswell. He said Usher did take photos, but not of the voting machines, only of people who wanted to pose with him.

People who waited in long lines for their turns at the voting machine and honored the rule not to take photos were not impressed. The argument that it was for security and crowd control reasons because of the celebrity status didn't impress others either. The argument was there is always absentee voting if that is likely to present a problem.

So what do you think? Should celebrities be given special privileges at the polls?

While he could have done absentee voting, he still has a right to vote however he wants to. When I first heard this, i rolled my eyes, but when I heard the reason why, it made sense. They put him in front to keep him from being a distraction. However, as any star does, he became one anyway by violating the rules. As long as they "ushered" him out when he was done, I don't have a problem with it.

distraction was his intent, they should have beat the crap out of him, the other people in line that is. his 'crew' had no reason to be there and should have been arrested for interfering with the orderly conduct of a polling place.

If i was in line I would have told him what a waste he was, and called for law enforcement for disturbing the and my peace. He needs to be reminded that he is just as good as anyone else, and that includes waiting in line like the rest of us. Celebrity? His vote carries as much weight as anyone else. Making a publicity stunt out it makes it worse and shows his real 'patriotism'. More it showed what a waste of breathing air he is.

Really? Allowed to break in line? Who are these egotistical, self righteous people that think they are above everyone else? I agree with you Jim.

Not just no, but hell no. Who would even have known who he was if he hadn't made a stink about it? If you're so worried that you'll be a distraction, mail in your vote. He's the classic example from Animal Farm that "all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others". Entitlement. Even among the rich and famous, it's an ugly thing.

When people choose to photograph, video, and get excited about a celebrity they cause a disturbance. It is great he choose to vote and have it photographed as many of us did. It encourages young people to vote. He obviously needed that crew to protect him from those of you who want to beat him up. If they told you Mitt Romney was able to cut in line you wouldn't have a problem with it. Be kind not angry.;)

Special access HE!! NO!

Give that to those who by their actions secure and protect our right to vote by their service in the military.

It hasn't always been a volunteer based organization, but those who serve deserve the honor and recognition NOT performers.

Funny, we didn't hear about Tyler Perry needing this service, even though he at least has been EXTREMELY charitable in a personal way within the metro area...

Why even Kevin Kenerly stood in line with the regular Joes and not a disturbance was to be found...
Most celebrities are just "legends in their own mind"

What is wrong with you people? I don't care WHO you are, you have no right to break in line! If I was rich, I most certainly wouldn't make a scene by bringing a whole entourage to go vote. If he had just walked up to vote like us "regular" people, this never would have been an issue. it's when you try to elevate yourself above the rest of us where I have a problem.

Could he have maybe had an assistant hold his place in line? Chosen to go at a slower time of the day? Or maybe do like other celebrities like Beyonce and Kim Kardashian (we can debate whether she's an ACTUAL celebrity later) and get an absentee ballot?

Absolutely. He chose to make a scene. Being polite and respectful of others (others being the other people that had BEEN standing in line) would have been the proper action. He knows how to draw a crowd and that wasn't the time or place to do it. Very childish in my opinion.

@ Chris - that's it. This is the electorate now. This is a generation that has been raised by telelvision and its morals. Long gone are the role models that stood for decency and deep convictions to do the right thing. This generation also did not live through communism and socialism and seen its dirty end of a people. Amazing to me that immigrants that RUN FROM that type of government will have nowhere to run when they discover that we are no different.
They only see the superficial, short term rewards and outward appearance rather than the content of your character is what they are judged by. I don't mind a celebrity trying to eneregize young kids for something like voting but some of the role models of kids today are less than stellar. Usher is not all that bad, but his contemporaries sing things about killing cops, and disrespecting woman by calling them "ho's". I did a huge research story on this a few years ago and had to bleep out most of it (the lyrics are unmentionable here). Yet, people hold them up as someone to look up to. No wonder this generation feels entitled to what others work hard for. Go figure.

We are all about to see a joint super "Comprehensive" massive amnesty and tax increases on the Rich.

( Rich ACTUALLY defined when all is said and done as making more than 45K)

Speaker Boehner just CAN'T for the full scale sellout to begin, cause there's a congressional vote in 2014 and he has to keep the House.

Well, chris, it starts with education but people have to willing to listen. Sometimes we (humans) have to lose everything in order to look up. Onceyou get people's attention and get theri eyes off of every word spoken by the media propaganda machine, you can teach them the the economics that we speak of is to help you be successful and excel. Just think, if a poor person became rich how much they could do to give back. That's the conservative mesage, but it requires hard work, and face it, we have become lazy.

Not unless they have to go really, really bad and in that case, still an assistant should hold their place in line. He diluted the American process by being simply a nuisance! Publicity is like eating black eyed peas for days, even though the results stink, some celebrities don't care, they just continue eating it all up under any circumstance. Unless this is the first time Usher has voted, he fully knew what his presence would bring to those adoring fans. So was his purpose to cast his vote, obviously not since he could not stand in line or absentee vote.

I have friends from every walk of life, but there are some that I think of when I hear a politician say that they have enough money - they don't need it! really? How do you know that? These peole live in St. Ives. The Dad is a famous athlete and is worth millions. Let's see...what do they do with their money ? They go to nursing homes and find people whose insurance hs run out and pays their bills. They have started numerous ministries where they do the same; they've taken in homeless people and helped them get a start on life. And these people aren't rich, white people either before anyone gets racial on this. I know the rebuttal. "But they can't give to everybody which is why the government has to!" Oh Lord.... somebody else explain how that one works. It gets frustrating talking to a blank wall.

Tammy- It has to do with the entitlement mentality that has become pervasive in this country. But here's the rub. According to 2009 IRS statistics, 140 million people filed tax returns, but only 82 million paid taxes. Considering that annual federal expenditures are approximately $4 trillion, EVERY one of those taxpayers would have to pay $49,000 in income tax to cover the expenditures. The government has other forms of tax revenue, so in actual practice, that number would be reduced, but it doesn't take much analysis to see that there aren't enough wealthy taxpayers to make a significant difference in the deficit. "Tax the rich" may play well on Main Street in Liberalville, but the idea that it will have any practical benefit is pure fantasy. The data is all on the IRS web site for anyone to view, but that won't make a difference. The entitlement crowd will either ignore it or discount it as being untrue, so don't wast your breath.

I've known a number of celebrities, and the thing I could never figure out is the reason they are considered as such. Just because someone is good at making faces in front of a camera, or has a great singing voice, plays a professional sport or just has a lot of money means nothing more than that. They're famous because they earn a living by appearing on front of a large audience, and while they may have exceptional talent in one area, they are often sorely lacking in truly important human characteristics. A true celebrity would have stood in line like everyone else or would have voted with an absentee ballot. Anyone who brings an entourage to the polls is just a low class personality with some serious self-esteem problems

Amazingly enough Dave, I will make 49,000 in my dreams. So, I will owe the government more than I make eventually. Oh....wait....sin't that communism where I make money, the government takes it and distributes it back to the masses as they see fit? What amazes me more are those who are fooled by it. And it is fitting to talk about htis on a post that asks about celebrities because that's how we choose our leaders today. Whoever has the most charisma.

The bible says that people will CHOOSE to be blind. They will willing follow those who tickle their ears. Sad even more is that much of this comes from people who say it's godly to vote this say. But the bilbe says, too, that even the elect, if possible, will be fooled by the spirit of this age. The wheat and the tares are being separated.

Having spent considerable time in China, I have a first hand view of how communism works. China doesn't just hand out money like we do here. They actually require the recipients to work. Sweeping streets is a popular job. I wonder how big the protest would be if America started handing out brooms along with food stamps.

Until he backflips into his clothes, finds a cure for cancer or heals all the world issues with a tip of his head - he is no better than any other person waiting in line. If Usher was in such a hurry to vote and did not have time to wait in line - he should have done the absentee vote.

I'm simply proud to live in a civilization that affords everyone the right to vote without being beat up, shot, imprisoned, stone walled because they might be female etc.....instead, I have to read about the same sentiment on the patch. The fact that you even suggest it or that it bothers you so much shows the depth of your character, and that for me is wierdly scary given I live in the land of the free. "Our" civilized society promotes freedoms that can only be seen by billions of others at the movies or read about in books. I applaud Governor Rodney for asking us to pray for the president and support him. The electoral process is over, the people have chosen their leader for the next 4 years, lets band together as brothers and sisters, put aside our differences and continue on the path to rebuild our great nation. If our kids read our comments today about their music sensation, how do you think they would interpret the message? If Peter Frampton, Garth Brooks, Serena Williams, Sarah Palin or Ken Block showed up at my polling station, I would have preferred that they cut in front and then asked to take pictures with my kids ;-). PS: Those are a few of my celebrities, who are your celebrity type stars?

Somehow the answers to question about celebrities has shifted to taxing the rich, entitlement mentality, rich people work harder and give back and oh yes, the ever popular "media propaganda" machine. I think the rich should pay at least the same percentage as me; the majority of the so called "entitlement mentality" comes from several things one being Social Security and I worked and put money in that fund. The same "rich" people that are "conservative" and propelled us into this economic mess want to manage the Social Security fund. If the "rich" people wanted create jobs they would have but it meant much more money in their pocket to outsource to foreign country. So to all the folks that get their news from Fox (the same outlet by the way that hacked into phones in the UK and did other bad things) the economy will continue to improve but you will not hear about it unless you look for data in other sources.

Girl, I've said tis before but will say it again for your benefit. YOU are the problem. Stop buying outsourced goods and goods won't be outsourced. Buy American and it will create jobs in America.

I will also ask that you follow your own advice...get your news from a variety of sources. I don't watch Fox. Nor do I watch MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS. NBC, etc. All slanted and sources of deception.

waving_girl

1:43 pm on Monday, November 12, 2012

So you think simply buying American will bring jobs back? I don't disagree that we should buy American but it won't create enough jobs. However one bigger more effective thing to do, is make it painful for businesses to outsource work out of our country to places that barely pay workers. The businesses that keep work in the US are the ones that should get tax credits not Exxon Oil or the like. I assume you really do watch Fox because your media mantra sounds like theirs. Interesting that you assume I don't take my advice. There are many sources for information if one is really looking for the truth and not looking for what backs up their own skewed views.
