A raccoon that police say attacked a Winder family's dog tested positive with the first confirmed case of rabies in Barrow County this year, according to a report by the Barrow Journal.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the majority of rabies cases each year occur in wild animals, such as raccoons, skunks, bats and foxes. More information on the fatal viral disease, including statistics, risks for pets and more, can be found here.
