Jud Smith to Seek Re-election as Barrow County Sheriff

Smith announced his intention to seek re-election as sheriff.

Jud Smith plans to seek re-election as sheriff of Barrow County.

Smith announced this week he will kick off his re-election campaign Feb. 3 during an event at Constance Manor in Winder.

The public is invited to attend the reception, sponsored by the Committee to Re-elect Sheriff Jud Smith, which will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at the event venue located at 70 Church St.

“I’m just letting people know that I do plan to run for re-election, and I look forward to the election season,” Smith said in a post on the Barrow County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.

Smith said he is not aware of any challengers who intend to run for sheriff.

“I look forward to May to see if there is going to be anybody there,” Smith said. “I can’t worry about it, if there is going to be anybody. I’ve got to run like there are six of us running.”

What do you think about Jud Smith's intentions to seek re-election as sheriff? What do you think about his efforts as sheriff thus far? Tell us in comments.

Jud Smith has paid excessive overtime pay, had to pay out on law suits after allegations of beatings on the street and inside the Detention Center by out of control deputies, and has had a captain of his investigated for inappropriate Face Book comments. Employees who reported abuses at the jail (including taking inappropriate photos of women detainees) were fired by Jud Smith (see www.barrownaacp.org).

We need a change. I am voting for his opponent in the Nov. election James Scott (www.scottforsheriff.org). He has 24 years experience in law enforcement (19 with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office!). Jud only has 4 years experience with the Sheriff's Office. He was a city policeman in 2008 - check the record. In essence Smith has been basically learning on the job - and costing tax payers big money!
