'I'm Too Drunk': Man Requests Medical Treatment for Intoxication

An officer with the Winder Police Department responded to the Save-A-Lot parking area off West Athens Street on March 19, 2012, in response to a report that an intoxicated male was harassing customers and asking for money.

A man who was arrested recently and charged with public intoxication requested medical assistance because he was "too drunk".

An officer with the Winder Police Department responded to the Save-A-Lot parking area off West Athens Street on March 19, 2012, in response to a report that an intoxicated male was harassing customers and asking for money.

Shortly after arriving at the location, the officer was advised by dispatch that the suspect had entered a store and asked that an ambulance be called.

According to an incident report, the officer made contact with the suspect, 46-year-old Donald Leon Edwards, homeless, who the officer said smelled strongly of an alcoholic beverage and was severely slurring his speech.

"Mr. Edwards was having a hard time staying upright and walking," the report reads. "I asked Mr. Edwards what he needed an ambulance for and he stated 'I'm too drunk'."

An ambulance arrived at the location and transported Edwards to Barrow Regional Medical Center for treatment, where staff informed the officer that the man was too intoxicated to be released — he had a blood alcohol content of .479, according to the incident report.

The officer returned to the hospital when Edwards was set to be released on March 20 and placed the man under arrest for public intoxication. Edwards was then transported to the Barrow County Detention Center.
