Growth of Suburbs at Historic Low with Barrow County Among those Most Affected

The Associated Press cites new census estimates as of July 2011 that highlight a shift in population trends — Americans again are shunning moves at record levels and staying in big cities.

Barrow County is among several suburban areas across the country showing the most significant slowdown in growth, according to The Associated Press.

Once an escape from urban problems, suburban regions hit by foreclosures are posting bigger jumps in poverty than cities, the report reads.

Yale University economist Robert J. Shiller, co-creator of a Standard & Poor's housing index, believes America is now at a turning point, shifting away from faraway suburbs in the long term in light of persistently high gasoline prices.

Have you seen a slowdown in growth in Barrow County? What do you think this slowdown will mean for the future? Tell us in comments.

I can't speak as to the overall trend, but I know this:

We moved from Atlanta (DeKalb County) to Statham three years ago, and we're never going back. The high gasoline prices of the commute are pretty horrid, but the lower cost of living and better environment for raising my kids makes it worth every penny. My husband and I love our community, and remark on a daily basis how blessed we are to be here.

I strongly believe the cost of fuel is an deterrent.
