Five Things to Do This Weekend: Sept. 23-25
Head out to the 27th annual North Georgia Folk Festival or the 19th annual Insect-ival! this weekend.
- When and where: 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville
- Why go: To see stage and screen star Steve Coulter play a quirky Dutch librarian who turns into a globe-trotting detective when he becomes obsessed about a book, 113 years overdue
- Cost: $15 per person or $12 per person for groups of 10 or more
2. Heritage Day: Remember a Call to Arms at the William Harris Homestead
- When and where: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the William Harris Homestead in Monroe
- Why go: To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with re-enactments and celebrate the 19th-century lifestyle with craft demonstrations, including spinning, weaving, flint knapping, plowing with mules, chair caning, soap making, candle dipping, grits grinding, children’s games from the 1800s, music and more
- Cost: $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 7 to 12 and free for kids 6 and younger
- When and where: 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens
- Why go: To learn about the creepy-crawly world of insects by exploring discovery stations and the insect café, watching puppet shows and celebrating the annual butterfly release on the lawn of the International Garden
- Cost: $5 per person, $20 maximum per family and free for children younger than 2
4. 27th annual North Georgia Folk Music Festival
- When and where: 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Sandy Creek Park in Athens
- Why go: To enjoy this popular outdoor festival dedicated to folk music and art and listen to an outstanding lineup including Cosmic Charlie, Beverly Smith and Alice Gerrard and the Georgia Mudcats
- Cost: $10 for adults, $5 for students and free for children younger than 12 along with a $2 per person park admission fee for ages 3 to 64
- When and where: 7:30 p.m. Saturday at 106 West Music School, Supplies and Performing Arts Venue
- Why go: To hear or be heard at this friendly venue that promotes the original music and spoken word of local talent
- Cost: $5 admission, free for performers
