Book Bags and School Supplies Available for Barrow County Children in Need

Parents can pick up items, while supplies last, beginning at 4 p.m. today at Russell Middle School.

It's back to school for Barrow County students in August, and a local organization is helping children and families in need with school supplies.

Barrow County Famiy Connection/Communities in Schools is hosting a Back to School Bash starting at 4 p.m. today at Russell Middle School, where organizers and volunteers will be giving out book bags and school supplies. Supplies are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, and those requesting supplies must have to have a state-issued photo ID and must live in Barrow County. A card will be completed for each child receiving supplies.

School supplies will still be available after all backpacks are given out.

The organization is also still accepting donations, which can be dropped off beginning at 2:30 p.m. prior to the event. Donations of book bags and notebook paper are especially welcome.

"What we really want to give is bookbags and at least notebook paper," said Melinda Shealey, with Barrow County Famiy Connection/Communities in Schools.

The organization is also hosting a Stuff the Bus event at Holly Hill Mall in Winder. Donations of school supplies will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 1 through 3 at a bus parked outside the Barrow County News and will be given out to families in need from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 6.
