The Northeast Georgia area's jobless rate increased eight-tenths of a percentage point in June.
The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that the preliminary unemployment rate in the Northeast Georgia area rose to 8.8 percent, up from 8 percent in May. The rate was 9.8 percent in June 2011.
Barrow County's unemployment rate is slightly lower at 8.6 percent.
According to a news release, the rate for Northeast Georgia increased because 1,159 new job seekers entered the labor force, but were unable to find work, pushing unemployment up 2,486.
