Following a severe winter, a dry spring and a lingering drought, millions of armyworms descended on Barrow County in August 1977. County extension agent Doug Garrison said the dry and unusually warm spring bought the worms out of “overwintering” stages earlier than usual and prompted northward migration through Georgia. “They eat up everything,” said Barrow County farmer Herman Carter.
